2020 JAG Career Development Conference

Over 200 JAG students from our 9 participating schools signed up to compete in this year's JAG Career Development Conference.  The students met on the campus of Ivy Tech Community College on January 17, 2020 to put their skills to the test.

The students competed in a variety of events that highlighted their talents in such competitions as Critical Thinking, Employability Skills, Financial Literacy, Career Presentations and many more.  In addition to the competition, the students were able to tour the Ivy Tech campus, see presentations from Ivy Tech and Vincennes University and network with other students and Community Leaders.

Once again, local employers and Community Leaders donated their time to participate as judges for the event.  The first place winners in each event will move on to compete in the State Competition in March.

Congratulations to everyone who participated!

Indiana JAG Receives 5 of 5 Award

Press Release:

Indiana’s Jobs for America’s Graduates program continues to shine as a national leader among its peers, earning a prestigious award for the fifth consecutive year.

JAG Indiana, which is administered by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD), received the “5 of 5” Award July 10 at a national JAG conference in Orlando, Florida. The award recognized the Indiana program for exceeding five goals set at the national level relating to graduation rates, post-secondary education, job placement and other significant milestones.

“The Jobs for America’s Graduates program impacts the lives of young people in an extraordinary way, and I’m thrilled to see Indiana’s proven results honored with the ‘5 of 5’ Award,” Gov. Eric J. Holcomb said. “Indiana leads the nation with more JAG programs (139) than any other state, and by helping students complete their high school diplomas, we keep young Hoosiers on the path to lifelong success.”

JAG Indiana’s achievements for the 2018-19 school year include:

  • 96% graduation rate (national goal is 90%);
  • 74% job placement, including military (national goal is 60%);
  • 90% positive outcome rate, meaning either landing a job, joining the military or going on to post-secondary education (national goal is 80%);
  • 92% full-time placement (national goal is 80%);
  • 79% in full-time jobs (national goal is 60%).

In addition, 77 individual JAG programs statewide achieved “5 of 5”, a state record; and all 12 DWD regions throughout Indiana earned “5 of 5” awards for the second consecutive year.

“The JAG Indiana program continues to soar to new heights with a fifth consecutive 5 of 5 award, and we are so proud of how it is helping Hoosier youths find success,” said Brianna Morse, DWD’s director of youth initiatives. “The dedicated JAG staff around the state work tirelessly year-round to transform the lives of their students in and out of the classroom, and it’s those relationships that make all the difference.”

JAG is a state-based, national not-for-profit organization active in 35 states that assists high school students by helping them overcome academic challenges and achieve graduation.

JAG Indiana has grown to be the largest affiliate in the national network, with 139 programs statewide. Gov. Holcomb, who recently served as chairman of JAG’s National Board of Directors, has a goal of expanding the program throughout the state. Since 2006, more than 30,000 students have participated in JAG Indiana with 95 percent graduating from high school.

Last school year, more than $35 million in scholarship money was awarded to JAG Indiana students, another record and best in the nation.

The JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) model is a comprehensive competency based program focused on the academic attainment and development of essential skills needed to attach successfully to post-secondary education, advanced training and/or the labor market.  The Western Indiana Workforce Development Board was one of the first boards in Indiana to bring JAG to area high schools when the program began in Indiana.  Sullivan High School and Terre Haute North High School partnered with the Board in 2008-2009 to launch the program.

Since that beginning, the local program has grown from two to nine area high schools. These schools include: Northview High School, Riverton Parke Junior/Senior High School, Sullivan High School, Terre Haute North Vigo High School, Terre Haute South Vigo High School, West Vigo High School, Cloverdale High School, Parke Heritage High School, and North Putnam High School.

Our local JAG network now serves more than three hundred students annually.  Through the hard work of our JAG Specialists, school administrators, local employers, labor, government and community based organizations these area programs continually exceed national “5 of 5” JAG program performance measures. For example, the graduation rate for the regional JAG program last year was 97%.

Over the past eleven years JAG of Western Indiana has positively impacted the lives of approximately two thousand high school students throughout our region.  The achievement of such success requires the support and dedication of numerous people and organizations.

2019 JAG Career Development Conference

After months of preparation and waiting an extra week due to the cold weather, the students from the 8 JAG programs in Region 7 were ready to put their skills to the test.  On Friday, February 1st approximately 200 students gathered on the Terre Haute campus of Ivy Tech for our Region's 8th annual Career Development Conference.

The conference featured competitions in a wide range of categories to utilize the skills the students have been learning throughout the year.  In addition to participating in competitions, the students were able to meet with fellow students from other area JAG programs and network with local employers and elected officials who served as judges for the event.

The first place winner in each competition will move on to the State contest which will be held March 15th at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis.

WorkOne Hosts Summer Camps to Highlight Career Opportunities

“It’s going great! I love it! I am so happy you suggested it to me. I would do it again if I could.” - Bree Wheeler

“The camp is going great. I’m really learning about the body and objects with surgery.” – Ryan Lumsdon

Those comments were from two local students who attended the Medical Careers Health Camp this summer. Held at the Landsbaum Center for Health Eduction in Terre Haute, the students learned about wide range of medical topics. The students discussed and participated in CPR, RHIC Simulation Center hands-on learning, Union Hospital Tour, job shadowing inquiries, cadaver lab, Tai Chi, career profile, community engagement project, EMT/Paramedic demo, nursing skills, suturing skills, healthy cooking, culminating project, job interviewing and resume writing. Speakers provide information on careers in Social Work, Dietetics, Gerontology, Health Science, Physical Therapy, and Nursing. The group also had a visit from the Edgar County EMS to learn about first responders.

But Health Care wasn’t the only camp available this summer. WorkOne sponsored camps that helped students explore career opportunities in numerous fields.

At the Entrepreneurship Camps, held in Sullivan and Terre Haute, students learned about marketing a product. Topics included, Business Ettiquette, How to select a product, measuring success and financial concerns.  The students met several guest speakers as well as taking several tours of local businesses.  At the end of the camp, they even got to make a product pitch to local community leaders, including Sullivan Mayor Clint Lamb.

In addition to their “pitches”, students also became Google Mobile Site certified. The Mobile Sites certification is a professional accreditation that Google offers to individuals who demonstrate proficiency in basic and advanced aspects of mobile website design and development. A Mobile Sites certification allows individuals to demonstrate that Google recognizes them as an expert in mobile sites.  The top finishers at the Terre Haute Camp were:

  • 1st - Cheyenne Cox
  • 2nd - Carina Elder
  • 3rd - Mari Gonzalez.

Many of us know how to use computer software, but do we really know what the actual computer is made of? The students at this year’s IC3 (Internet Core Computing Ceritification) camp got to learn about the inner workings of computers. The IC3 Camp, students built their own laptop. Students learned to assemble their laptop and install necessary software. At the end of the camp, the students had fully functional laptop to use.

Manufacturing continues to be a large part of our Region’s economy. So once again, WorkOne sponsored a CNC Machining camp at Ivy Tech Corporate College. The students were able to learn about the basic set up of CNC machines. Students ran operated the machine to create finished part as well as earning their first NIMS (National Institute of Metalworking Skills) credential.

Congratulations to all of the students who attended the camps.
Thank you to all of the community partners who assisted in making the camps a success.
