Recently WorkOne Staff participated in College and Career Days for local High School Students.

Clay Community Schools

In Clay County, the recently formed Career Success Coalition partnered with the Clay County Chamber of Commerce to host a College and Career Fair for Clay Community School Students.

The event was held at the Clay County Fairgrounds.  Approximately 600 Juniors and Seniors from Clay City and Northview High Schools attended the event. 

With over 20 exhibitors, the students were able to discuss career opportunities with local Colleges, area employers as well as all branches of the Armed Forces.

Students who visited the WorkOne table were provided with information about WorkOne Services available to them.

South Vermillion High School

At South Vermillion High School, Seniors were able to schedule individual interviews.  Students meeting with WorkOne staff were provided with information about all of the WorkOne services available to them.

JAG Students Raise Money In Memory of Fellow Students

The Terre Haute South JAG program recently completed an act of caring and show of school/community support. The students designed and sold memorial wristbands to help offset funeral and related expenses of the families of two Terre Haute South students, one a fellow JAG student, who passed away in a recent accident. All proceeds were donated to the families of these two students.

Clay County Veteran's Picnic:

In Brazil, the JAG Students from Northview and Cumberland Academy hosted a free picnic for Clay County Veterans.

Shake it Off:

In Vigo County, Terre Haute North JAG Students participated in Hamilton Center's Shake it Off Event to promote mental health awareness.

H & R Block Challenge:

Our Sullivan JAG students recently participated in the H&R Block Budget Challenge.  The students competed in a challenge that featured a simulated budget.   Students had to stick to a schedule, create a budget and log on complete various tasks such as paying bills on time and saving for retirement  

By finishing in the Top 25 out of thousands of schools nationwide the school received a $5,000 award!

Terre Haute North JAG Students Spring Service Projects

This spring, the JAG students at Terre Haute North High School have been busy.

In March, they were visited by Rebecca Blankenship-Moore from CODA (Council on Domestic Abuse) http://codaterrehaute.org/ .

Mrs. Blankenship-Moore discussed the importance of the organization and how CODA helps the members of our community.  The group also talked about the potential negative aspects of social media.  They learned about cyber bullying and techniques they could use to avoid it.  Finally, the students discussed potential careers with CODA and what

For Easter, the students assembled Easter baskets that they delivered to the children who are currently living in the CODA facility. 

In addition to the local issues of domestic violence, the students have also recently learned about the problem of human trafficking.  To help raise awareness of this terrible practice, the students sold bracelets and presented a $200 check to Hope For Justice (www.hopeforjustice.org)

WorkOne Participates in Apprenticeship Day

On Thursday March 12, students from North Vermillion, South Vermillion, Rockville, Riverton Parke and Turkey Run High Schools attended Apprenticeship Day.

The Event was held at the Parke County Fairgrounds in Rockville.  Students met with representatives of local trade unions such as:

• Carpenters
• Electricians
• Laborers
• Plumbers and Steamfitters
• Operating Engineers

The representatives provided the students with information about the careers available in these fields as well as the requirements for entering their apprenticeship programs.

WorkOne Business Team representatives attended the event as well.  We provided students with information about WorkKeys testing which the local Unions utilize as part of their hiring process as well as discussing other services available through WorkOne.

2015 JAG Career Development Conference

Throughout the school year, the JAG classes in our area learn the skills they need to compete in today’s workforce.  On Friday, January 16th, they got to put those skills to the test. 

Over 100 JAG Students from Clay, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan and Vigo Counties gathered on the campus of Ivy Tech Community College to participate in the 4th annual Career Development Conference. 

The students displayed their skills in a variety of competitions designed to highlight what they have learned.  The competitors got to meet with local Employers and Community Leaders, who volunteered to participate as judges for the events.

In addition to the competition, the students enjoyed lunch from Casey’s and listened to presentations from Ivy Tech Community College and Vincennes University about programs available to the students after they complete High School.

Those students who finished in First Place will get to compete at the State JAG Conference in March.

Congratulations to everyone who competed and good luck at the State Finals!

Region 7 JAG Program Receives 5 of 5 Award

Our JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) program was recently awarded the 5 of 5 Award for the second straight year.

As noted on the JAG website, www.jag.org, “Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) is a state-based national non-profit organization dedicated to preventing dropouts among young people who are most at-risk. In more than three decades of operation, JAG has delivered consistent, compelling results – helping nearly three-quarters of a million young people stay in school through graduation, pursue postsecondary education and secure quality entry-level jobs leading to career advancement opportunities.”

The 5 of 5 Award recognizes JAG programs that meet or exceed the standards in Five Categories that measure student success:

The 5 of 5 Awards applies to programs that have been in existence for more than one year. These statistics represent students from our Northview, Sullivan and Terre Haute North JAG classes. Last year, we launched new JAG programs in Parke (Riverton Parke, Turkey Run), Putnam (Greencastle, South Putnam), Vermillion (South Vermillion) and Vigo (Terre Haute South) counties. As these programs continue, the success of those students will be included in next year’s results.

Thank you to our dedicated JAG Instructors who are making such a positive influence on these students.

WorkOne Sponsors Summer Camps

This summer, WorkOne partnered with local education providers to sponsor several summer camps for the youth in our Region.

The camps provided attendees with hands on experience in a variety of career fields.  This year we offered camps for:

• Machining
• Welding
• Healthcare
• Electronics
• Construction
• Auto Service
• IC3 - Internet and Computing Core Certification
• Digital Photography
• Electrical Worker in Construction Industry
• Robotics

Most camps lasted one week and provided students with lunch.  By attending the camp, students were also able to earn a financial incentive and depending on the camp, keep many of the materials/tools that they used or created.

Project Ignition - Sullivan JAG

Sullivan JAG Helps Educate Students About Distracted Driving

Distracted driving has become a problem all too familiar in our society. 

To help address this issue, the Sullivan JAG class formed the "Project Ignition" team.  The goal of the team was to help educate local students about the importance of safe driving and to avoid: 

• Texting while driving
• Distracted driving
• Speeding
• Alcohol use Drug use

Three students from the team got together and wrote a grant proposal for their activity.  Their grant proposal was selected and the team was awarded $2000.00 from State Farm Insurance for their project!

The team demonstrate the dangers of distracted driving by staging a mock car crash.  The Project Ignition team coordinated assistance from local Police, Fire Departments and local school administrators to stage their event.  A Lifeline Helicopter was on site to simulate how serious an accident can be.

 To add to the realism, the students selected Prom Night as the theme of the event.  One of the cars involved featured a group of students on their way to Prom.

Project Ignition also used a portion of the grant to develop a "Pledge Banner" for all students and adults to sign as a commitment to safe driving.
