A large and substantial mid-19th century Wedgwood caneware game pie dish, c.1860. The dish has some very light signs of wear commensurate with age but generally remains in an excellent condition throughout, free from chips and cracks.
The exterior is unglazed to give the appearance of pastry, and boasts game and foliate detail with a well formed rabbit figure laying upon the lid next to a steam hole. The lid lifts to reveal a glazed interior, which again remains in an excellent condition. Whilst the piece would have originally had a liner, the dish remains functional as a pie dish.
The base is stamped 'Wedgwood' together with the associated serial number.
A very handsome and scarce example.
