While realizing that his scratchings about the island’s drumstick-loose-and-fancy-free chicken population is nothing to crow about, Roger admits to being the intrepid “Rooster Writer” for these yarns. Never liking to be cooped up, he travels the island of Kaua‘i, pecking around in search of the bizarre interactions between “gallus gallus domesticus” and “homo sapiens”.

You’ll meet “Rooster Red”, a talented bird that communicates occasionally with “Rooster Whisperer” Deputy Robert Moakane, who takes his talents seriously when “talking” with the birds but also understands the tongue-in-cheek nature of his uncanny abilities. The deputy recounts his experiences through the eyes – and words – of an intrepid investigative journalist. Also, as a special treat you’ll be privy to an interview with Pele, the Goddess of Volcanoes. Hot stuff.

If you’re familiar with Kaua‘i, you’ll recognize the island’s settings and the antics portrayed in the stories and in the 30 photos and unique images. Or, if you’re a chicken enthusiast (and who isn’t?), this book is for you. 

Roger Lepley has written these short stories as a result of many years of visits to Kaua‘i, along with his wife Kristy, both who reside in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Several of these stories have been published in The Garden Island newspaper. Roger is an architect and Kristy is an artist and photographer. The images were chosen and customized to fit the stories as well as feature the island’s stunning natural environment.
