The Hawaiian Journal of History is an annual journal devoted to original articles on the history of Hawaiʻi, Polynesia, and the Pacific area. Each issue includes articles on a variety of subjects; illustrations; book reviews; notes and queries; and a bibliography of recent Hawaiiana titles of historical interest. Individuals may receive the journal by joining the Hawaiian Historical Society.

Front Cover: The front cover of this year’s Journal features Kamehameha III, Kauikeaouli, as ayoung king of Hawai‘i. Robert Dampier painted the portrait in 1825, an oil on canvas, 23 1/4 x 19 5/8 inches (59.1 x 49.8 cm). Dampier was the expedition artist on the ship HMS Blonde, under the command of Captain George Byron. The HMS Blonde sailed to Hawai‘i to return the bodies of Kamehameha II, Liholiho, and Queen Kamāmalu, who had both died during a visit to England.
