Ivy Tech Celebrates Completion of 10th CNC Class

On Friday, August 12th students, family members, local employers, WorkOne employment advisors and representatives from Ivy Tech Corporate College gathered to celebrate the completion of the 10th CNC Machining Class.

The ceremony presented 5 students with their certificates of completion. Instructor John Ludlow praised the group for their hard work and dedication before passing out their certificates.  Once again, the class exceeded the number of NIMS (National Institute for Metal Working Skills) certifications by earning a total of 21 NIMS certifications. 

After the ceremony, the students gave a tour of the shop and demonstrated their new skills for their guests.

Dean of the School of Technology, David Will also announced that the program was nominated for recognition from the National Council for Workforce Education.

From Ivy Tech:

Today, Corporate College received AWESOME NEWS! Our CNC Machining Program has been nominated for a national award.

Our CNC Operator program consists of 225 clock hours of instruction and training. Students will be taught the entry-level skills required for securing employment in the CNC Machining Industry. Our goal is to equip these students with the tools to successfully become National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Certified; in the following areas. 
Machining Level 1, (Measurement, Materials & Safety) 
Machining Level 1, (Job Planning, Benchwork, & Layout)
Machining Level 1, (CNC Turning, Operations) 
Machining Level 1, (CNC Milling, Operations)

To date there has been a total of 48 students successfully complete the training. Throughout this course each student attempts 4 NIMS certification exams. During the course’s history there has been 189 NIMS attempts and 185 NIMS certification achieved, giving the course a 98% certification completion.

There’s still time to enroll in the next cohort. Class beings on September 20th.

WorkOne Sponsors 2016 Summer Camps

Once again, WorkOne has partnered with our Regional Education partners to sponsor summer camps.  The camps provided local youth with the opportunity to learn about exciting in demand career fields.

Entrepreneurship

Held in Sullivan and Parke counties, this camp focused on what it means to be an entrepreneur through guest speakers from the community.  As the speakers shared their journey through entrepreneurship concepts related to successful characteristics were introduced.  An offsite tour to Launch Terre Haute was incorporated for a better understanding of the support that is available for entrepreneurs in the region.  During the camp, attendees developed a Business Plan and conducted mock interviews with local business leaders in the role of potential investors with the winning team earning a prize. 

Healthcare

Held at the Landsbaum Center for Health Education in Vigo County, this camp will consisted of a mixture of lecture, lab, and hands-on training experiences provided by professional health-related faculty or staff.

Health disciplines introduced during the camp included: Social work, Phlebotomy, massage therapy, coding specialist, certified nurse assistant, veterinarian technician, athletic training, paramedic, respiratory therapy, gerontologist, dental hygienist, and music and art therapy.

The Lab/Hands-on componented consisted of: Emergency techniques such as spine boarding, wound care, splinting; stretching and taping skills; dissection demonstration of an animal heart; simulated blood testing; bed changes with a patient in the bed, bed baths, patient safety when lifting/moving; demonstration of massage techniques; and simulated medical care utilizing high fidelity mannequins.

Yaskokawa Motoman Robotics

Held in Clay and Vigo Counties, Participants were introduced to robotics and advanced manufacturing in an engaging and hands on learning environment. Participants completed the Yaskawa Motoman Robotics FS100 Basic Programming with Material Handling curriculum and had the opportunity to earn the certification. Participants received hands-on training with industry grade Yaskawa Motoman robots and controllers. Participants also completed hands on projects with a variety of advanced manufacturing equipment including CNC, gantry router, vinyl sign
machine, and 3D printer. Students left camp with a tangible project that they have completed. Participants also had the opportunity to tour local advanced manufacturing facility to learn how the information learned from the camp is used in industry.

CNC Milling 

The CNC Milling Camp was conducted at the Ivy Tech Corporate College location in Vigo County.  The course introduced students to the operation of a CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) Machine.  Participants in the camp completed hands on projects and had to the opportunity to earn a NIMS (National Institute of Metal Working Skills) certification.

Chopped

For students interested in the Culinary Arts, the Chopped Camp was the best menu choice.  For a week, students at the Ivy Tech Corporate College learned about food safety with topics such as ServSafe, CPR and First Aid.  The week culminated with the students competing in their own Chopped Cooking contest.

Region 7 JAG Once Again Earns 5 of 5 Award

Our JAG (Jobs for America's Graduates) program has once again been recognized for achieving the Indiana "5 of 5" Regional Award for the Class of 2014-2015 by meeting and exceeding JAG national standards.  Region 7 has earned this honor every year that it has been presented.  The 5 of 5 Award recognizes JAG programs that meet or exceed the standards in five categories that measure student success:

Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) is a state-based national non-profit organization dedicated to helping young people stay in school through graduation, pursue post-secondary education and secure quality entry-level jobs leading to career advancement opportunities.
